Why Hinfact · CBTA & EBT

Competencies,not hours.

Competency-Based Training and Assessment and Evidence-Based Training move aviation training from the repeated procedure to the competency that holds up against the unexpected.

What changes

From hoursto evidence.

  1. 01

    Hours and checks

Training was counted in hours, and validated by passing checks. The same programme for everyone.

  2. 02

    CBTA: competencies

Each person is assessed on a set of competencies, through behaviours an instructor can observe and grade.

  3. 03

    EBT: evidence

For airline recurrent training, data from operations and training decides what crews train next.

Illustrative

The nine competencies

Nine competencies.Every situation.

The ICAO competencies for pilots, each described by observable behaviours. Hover a competency to see an example.

  • KNO

    Application of knowledge

Knows and understands the information needed: limitations, systems, procedures, environment.

Example of observable behaviour: Demonstrates knowledge of limitations
  • PRO

Application of procedures and compliance with regulations

Applies procedures and regulations, with judgement.

Example of observable behaviour: Follows SOPs unless a higher degree of safety dictates
  • COM

    Communication

Communicates clearly, inside the crew and outside it.

Example of observable behaviour: Ensures the recipient is ready to receive information
  • FPA

    Flight path management, automation

Controls the flight path through automation.

Example of observable behaviour: Detects deviations and takes action
  • FPM

    Flight path management, manual control

Controls the flight path through manual flight.

Example of observable behaviour: Manages the energy of the aircraft
  • LTW

    Leadership and teamwork

Influences, encourages and coordinates the team.

Example of observable behaviour: Encourages team participation
  • PSD

    Problem solving and decision making

Identifies problems, weighs options, decides and reviews.

Example of observable behaviour: Monitors the result of a decision
  • SAW

Situation awareness and management of information

    Perceives, understands and anticipates.

Example of observable behaviour: Anticipates what could happen
  • WLM

    Workload management

Plans, prioritises and keeps capacity in reserve.

Example of observable behaviour: Manages interruptions

EBT in practice

One module,three phases.

Recurrent training for airline crews is organised in modules over a multi-year cycle. Mixed EBT lets an operator combine it with its existing programme during the transition.

  1. 01 · EVAL

    Evaluation phase

A realistic scenario to see where each crew stands, competency by competency.

  2. 02 · MT

    Manoeuvres training

The manoeuvres that need practice, flown until they are mastered.

  3. 03 · SBT

    Scenario-based training

Scenarios built on what operations reveal, to develop the competencies that need it.

With Hinfact Training

The experts

The expertswho work with Hinfact.

A platform does not make a programme evidence-based: people do. Consultancies, a manufacturer’s training organisation and independent specialists design programmes, standardise instructors and prepare approvals, and run their methods in Hinfact.

Salient

The EBT pioneerssalient.aero ↗

Who they areA provider of EBT and CBTA for operators, training organisations and authorities around the world: training and workshops, consultancy, and line operations safety audits (LOSA). Salient is led by Capt. Michael Varney, who led the development of evidence-based training through to its publication by ICAO in 2013.

With HinfactSalient and Hinfact work together on CBTA training philosophy and on bringing evidence-based programmes to operators. Programmes built on Salient’s approach run in Hinfact Training.
